Tales For A Farang: Intro

Tales For A Farang: Intro

What is a Farang?

Farang /fä’ɾəNG/

A colloquial term used in the Thai language to describe an individual that embodies Western upbringing, upholds the cultural norms and values of the West, and/or carries oneself with body language pertaining to Western idiosyncrasies.

I met a gentleman in Portland in 2018 who said to me: “it’s not so much about the places you go to that makes your travels memorable as much as it is about the people you meet.”

Looking back now, it’s evident that this still holds true. At the end of the day, when the novelty of a new destination wears off, it just becomes like any other place. Sure, the cultural customs might be different, but as you settle in and acclimate to those differences, what’s left? Traveling or not, it’s the people you connect with that adds that vivacious spark to your reality.

This series is a collection of photos and stories that were shared with me during my travels in Thailand and Singapore in 2019. Tales for a Farang wasn’t planned. The photos were just a way for me to remember all of the amazing people I met!
